GETTYSBURG, PA -- Bryn Benford (So., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) and Robyn Haertel (Fr., Millburn, NJ/Millburn) combined to finish in the top 10 of eight events as the Franklin & Marshall College women's track & field team finished seventh of 10 teams at the 2003 Centennial Conference Championship meet hosted by Gettysburg College. Benford, who shattered the school discus record with a throw of 118'-02" on Saturday, finished second in the triple jump (34'-06.25), eighth in the javelin (93'-10) and ninth in the shot put (32'-09.50). Haertel placed fifth in the triple jump (33'-02.00), sixth in the 100 meters (13.33) and seventh in the 200 meters (27.61) In addition, she was the leadoff leg of the fifth place 4X100 meters (52.75) relay team of Jeannette Finster (Jr., LaCanada, CA/Flintridge Preparatory), Beth Randolph (Fr., St. Davids, PA/Episcopal Academy) and Tara Cooney (Fr., Douglaston, NY/St. Francis) In other events, Cooney tallied an 8th place finish in the 400 meters (1:03.27) and anchored the 4X400 meters team of Sara Moser-Cohen (Fr., Fair Haven, NJ/Marine Academy of Science), Finster and Randolph to a seventh place finish (4:07.93). Kelly Witkowski (Sr., Colts Neck, NJ/Marlboro) placed fifth in the javelin (96'-07) and 13th in the shot put (29'-10.75) to round out F&M's finishers in the top 15.
The finish marks F&M's best since a seventh place in the 2000 CC Championships. Last year, the Diplomats finished 10th following a ninth place finish in the 2000 Championships.
