HAVERFORD, PA -- The Franklin & Marshall College women's indoor track team shattered six school records while placing fifth at the 2004 Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Haverford College.

The placement marked a three spot improvement over last year's eighth place finish and marks the second best finish for an F&M women's indoor track team at the Centennial Conference Championship Meet behind the 1995 squad's fourth place finish.

Overall, the Diplomats 65 team points marked the most ever scored by an F&M team bettering the previous high of 54 established in 1995. Further, the total also equals the number of points Franklin & Marshall scored at the 2003 (24 points, eighth), 2002 (16 points, ninth), 2001 (8 points, 10th) and 2000 (17 points, eighth) championships combined.

At the 2004 championships, the Diplomats had a strong showing in the sprints as Robyn Haertel (So., Millburn, NJ/Millburn) began the scoring for Franklin & Marshall placing fifth in the 55 meters in a time of 7.76, two hundredths of a second faster than her trials time of 7.78. She added to her point total in the 200 meters by placing fifth in 27.71 before Jeannette Finster (Sr., LaCanada, CA/Flintridge Prep) crossed the line in 1:03.57 to place ninth in the 400 meters.

In the 800 meters, Tara Cooney (So., Douglaston, NY/St. Francis) bested her own record time of 2:26.62 by hitting the line in 2:26.06 to place eighth and establish a new school record.

Cooney added to her record breaking performances as she joined Libby Haas (Fr., Wrightsville, PA/Eastern), Finster and Nikki Salentri (Fr., Crosswicks, NJ/Northern Burlington) in recording a time of 12:55.21 to place third in the distance medley relay and erase the previous record of 13:02.65 held by Finster, Beth Randolph (So., St. Davids. PA/Episcopal Academy), Cooney and Anne Blommer '06 from the 2003 season.

In the 4X800, Cooney again was a part of a record breaker as the relay crossed the line in 10:02.21 to place fifth and erase the previous mark of 10:03.9 set by Finster, Cassie McCormick '04, Susanne Daly '02 and Sam Pollinger (Sr., Mahwah, NJ/Northern Highlands) from the 2002 season.

Cooney capped off her weekend by anchoring the 4X400 meter relay team of Finster, Haas and Bryn Benford (Jr., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) to a third place finish while setting a school record time of 4:12.59. The time eclipses the previous record of 4:15.06 set by Randolph, Finster, Brittney Dhein (So., Telford, PA/Pennridge) and Cooney from the 2003 season.

In the field events, the Diplomats established a pair of school records as Laura Lautenbacher (Fr., Langhorne, PA/Nazareth Academy) cleared 3.03 meters (9'- 11 3/4") to place second and reset her own school record of 9'-6" from earlier this season, and Benford flew 11.10 meters (36'-5") in the triple jump to place third and erase the her previous record of 34-10.75 from earlier this season.

In other finishes, Haas placed third in the high jump (1.52 meters), Haertel and Benford finished third (4.87 meters) and fourth (4.84 meters) in the long jump, respectively, and Benford placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 10.38 meters.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on March 5-7 at the ECAC Championships in Maine.
