Benford Leads Women's Track & Field at Little Three Championships

GETTYSBURG, PA - Bryn Benford (Jr., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) placed among the top five finishers in eight events to lead the Franklin & Marshall College women's track & field team at the 2004 Little Three Championships hosted by Gettysburg College.

She dominated the field events wining the javelin (97'-1"), hammer (113'-1") and shot put (34'-9"), while placing second in the long jump (15'-6.25"), triple jump (33'-7.5") and finishing third in the discus (93'-11") and fifth in the high jump (4'-8"). On the track, she placed sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.47) to account for 30 of F&M's 97 points.

In the distance events, Meredith Janeczek (Fr., Hershey, PA/Hershey) placed third in the steeplechase (13:02.40), Karen Ziga (Fr., Haverford, PA/Haverford) crossed the line fifth in the 5,000 meters (19:52.07) while Nikki Salenetri (Fr., Crosswicks, NJ/Northern Burlington) and Sam Pollinger (Sr., Mahwah, NJ/Northern Highlands) finished third (2:30.18) and fifth (2:33.30), respectively, in the 800 meters.

In the sprints, Robyn Haertel (So., Millburn, NJ/Millburn) placed fourth in the 200 meters (27.92), while the best on-track performance belonged to Jeannette Finster (Sr., LaCanada, CA/Flintridge Preparatory) who crossed the line in 1:08.30 to edge out Gettysburg's Cat Arnold (1:08.61) and win the 400 hurdles. Further, F&M placed third in the 4X100 (51.88) and second in the 4X400 (4:20.50) relays.

Off the track, Sarah Primak (So., Mifflintown, PA/Juniata) placed fourth in the pole vault (8'-7"), Haertel finished third in the long jump (15'-4") and triple jump (32'-8.25") and Libby Haas (Fr., Wrightsville, PA/Eastern) won the high jump (5'-2").

Overall, Gettysburg College captured the Little Three women's title with 149.5 points, while Dickinson and F&M followed with 118.5 and 97 points, respectively.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on April 10 at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Invitational.
