LANCASTER, PA – The 2005 Little Three Outdoor Track & Field Meet will be held on March 29th at Franklin & Marshall College’s Sponaugle-Williamson Field at 4:00 p.m. In last season’s meet hosted by Gettysburg College, the Dickinson College men were victorious while Gettysburg took the women’s side. The Red Devils collected 146 team points to outdistance Gettysburg (117) and Franklin & Marshall (105) in the men’s championship, and the Bullets earned 149.5 points while Dickinson (118.5) and Franklin & Marshall (97) rounded out the women’s meet. The highlight of the men’s meet should be the 100 yard dash and the 800 yard run as six of the top ten place winners in the 100 yard dash are back and nine of the top twelve place winners are back in the 800 yard run. In the 100-yard dash Dickinson College’s Brent Madoo is back to defend his title as he ran the event in 11.21 to qualify for the ECAC meet. Franklin & Marshall’s Adam Brower (Sr., Havertown, PA/Haverford) crossed the line in 11.26 to finish third and Dustin Green of Gettysburg finished fourth in 11.35. Dickinson’s Erick Straub finished first last year in the 800 meters in a time of 2:01.80, three seconds ahead of teammate Matt Gallagher ’04. The Bullets Zak Golladay and Sean Ridley finished third and fourth in 2:06.90 and 2:07.80. The Diplomats’ Matt Batzel (Sr., Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna) finished seventh in a time of 2:11.40. In the field events, the shot put and javelin will be the two events to watch during the day as four of the top five are back in the shot and three of the top five return in the javelin. Gettysburg’s Glenn Cain returns from last season’s victory as he heaved the shot put 12.92 meters to collect seven team points for finishing first. Fellow Bullet John Heller comes back as his 12.56 meters toss was good enough for third, while Ken Williams of Gettysburg and Alex Falk (So., Philadelphia, PA/Trinity-Pawling) of Franklin & Marshall finished fourth and fifth and will look to move up this year. Chris Halleman of Gettysburg finished first last year in the javelin with an ECAC meet qualifying throw of 51.40 meters. F&M’s Falk earned third place with a toss of 48.95 meters while the Bullets Scott Sheppard was fourth (48.42 meters). The 100 meters hurdles should highlight the women’s meet as four of the top six return from last season’s meet. Cheron Walker of Gettysburg won the event last year in a time of 15.70, which qualified her for the ECAC meet, while Teammate Caitlin Giblin finished second in 17.30, Dickinson’s Jenn Mytar finished fourth (18.00) and Bryn Benford (Sr., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) of Franklin & Marshall finished sixth (18.47). The 100, 200 and 400 yard dashes will also be very competitive. In the 100 yard dash Lauren Parker of Gettysburg leads the way as she finished second last year in a time of 12.70. F&M’s Robyn Haertel (Jr., Millburn, NJ/Millburn) finished third in 13.10 while Dickinson’s Abby Husk and Judith Rudge finished fourth and fifth and Brittany Dhein (Jr., Telford, PA/Pennridge) of Franklin & Marshall finished sixth as all five runners should have a chance to take the title in 2005. Eight of the 10 place winners in the 200 yard dash also return as Lauren Parker is also the favorite in this event as she finished second in 26.20 last season. Gettysburg Melissa Wiley and Franklin & Marshall’s Libby Haas (So., Wrightsville, PA/Eastern York) are the favorites in the 400 yard dash as the pair finished first (1:01.7)) and second (1:02.00), respectively, last year. In the field events the high jump and shot put will be the two events to watch. The high jump features the top three place winners as Haas returns to defend her title as she jumped 1.575 meters to claim seven team points. Shelby Ellis of Gettysburg finished tied for second last year with a jump of 1.525 meters, while Jen Lazuta of Gettysburg finished fourth. Benford will look to defend her shot put title from last year as she tossed the implement 10.59 meters. She could face a tough challenge from Dickinson’s Iva Liou of Dickinson who finished second last year with a throw of 10.47 meters. The 2005 meet marks the 56th men’s Little Three track & field competition as the Diplomats lead the all-time series with 24 victories to Gettysburg’s 21 and Dickinson’s 10. Admission to the Little Three Championships is free and open to the public.
