LANCASTER, PA – Franklin & Marshall College cross country runner Sarah Aronoff (Jr., Bethesda, MD/Chevy Chase) received the 2004 F&M Women's Sportsmanship Award at the College's annual athletics awards reception. The award is presented to an F&M athlete for achievements beyond the field of play in fairness and competitive spirit which are not measured in wins and losses but bring pride to the their sport, the College and themselves. A psychology major with a minor in astronomy and a member of the Franklin & Marshall cross country and track & field teams, she was active in a myriad of activities. During the summer of 2003 she coached at Little Falls Pool in Bethesda giving back to the community. Further, she trained for and ran in the Marine Corps Marathon at age 16 because she wanted to support AIDS programs at the Whitman-Walker Clinic raising more than $1,800 -- more than the required entrance threshold -- and finished in the top third. One of the leaders of the cross country team, in the first meet of the season, she crossed the finish line in 13:45 to capture 23rd place as the Franklin & Marshall finished fourth at the Ursinus College Brian Dennis Memorial 3K Meet. She continued the season at the Bloomsburg (29th, 26:30), Lebanon Valley (44th, 21:58.53), Little Three (25th, 16:57) and Dickinson (84th, 26:18.88) meets before a tragic kayaking accident off Cape Cod claimed her life on October 12th. In the team's race on October 18 at DeSales University, the women's cross country team ran the 3.1-mile course in unity as a memorial.
