LANCASTER, PA - The Franklin & Marshall College cross country teams collected over 100 lbs. of canned and boxed food items for the Lancaster City food banks by hosting the F&M Cross Country Series on July 13 and 27 at the College's Baker Campus.

The idea of Franklin & Marshall cross country coach Keith Dieterle, the team offered 2.5K, 5K and 8K races for the 60 participants at a registration cost of $5.00 and a can of food.

Overall, F&M sophomore Karen Ziga was the women's series winner as she placed first in the 8K (38:28) and 2.5K (11:48) and second in the 5K (24:47) during competition on July 13. In week two, she swept the races winning the 5K (24:09) and 8K (39:48) after establishing a new course record in the 2.5K (9:57).

In men's competition, F&M alum Paul Barber '89 won the 8K in week two (29:23) edging out Mark Amway who was coming off a course record 18:11 time in the 5K. In the final series standings, Tim Getz captured the title winning the 5K (19:21) in week one and finishing fourth (20:06) in week two.

In addition to the races, the teams offered open runs for the Lancaster community on Thursday evenings in June and July beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the College's Iannicelli track. Approximately 65 runners joined the team over the course of the summer as the program built from a 5K run in the first week to a 10-mile loop at the conclusion of the series.

The cross country team will next host a race on October 23 as the team will hold the 2nd Annual Friends of Sarah 5K during the College's Alumni Weekend celebrations. The race is dedicated to the memory of Sarah Aronoff, an F&M cross country runner who passed away in a kayaking accident off Cape Cod last fall.

Franklin & Marshall will open the 2004 varsity cross country season on September 4, as the team will compete at the Delaware Valley College Invitational.
