F&M Players to Present Urinetown March 22-24

LANCASTER, Pa. - The F&M Players, Franklin & Marshall College's student-run musical theater group, will present the musical, Urinetown, by Greg Kotis; lyrics and music by Mark Hollman, March 22-24 in the Roschel Performing Arts Center. The production will be directed by Jill Fonda '07.

Performances will be on March 22-24 at 8 p.m. A matinee performance will take place on March 24 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for students; $7.50 for F&M employees; $10 for off-campus patrons. Visit our electronic box office for up-to-date information, www.fandm.edu/boxoffice.xml, or call the box office at 717-358-4858.

Hilarious and irreverent (but still OK for kids), Urinetown is about a place where people pay to,… well you get the idea. The corrupt rich rule with empty bladders, while the poor get poorer with every trip to the toilet, and the troubled masses aren't going to stand (or sit) for this kind of injustice any longer.

"Urinetown is not your typical absurdist, melodramatic musical," said Fonda. "Peeing, love at first sight, kidnapping, and a rebellion are seamlessly interwoven into non-stop comedic madness, complete with puns, parodies, sight gags, and a few jokes that poke fun at the show itself. But despite the seeming irreverent title and the hilarious dialogue, Kotis and Hollman hold strong to some important themes, such as the classic struggle of the haves vs. the have-nots, corporate scandal, and mob psychology."

Urinetown also pays tribute to 19th century British political economist: Thomas Malthus who believed that life would be rendered unsustainable if the population continued to grow and our resources continued to diminish. "At the end of Urinetown, the entire cast triumphantly asserts, 'Hail Malthus!,' Kotis' way of reminding us we need to stop thinking only of today and start thinking of our tomorrows, too," said Fonda.

"Despite the ominous themes, we hope our production makes you laugh so hard you cry while inspiring you to go out and affect social change. After all, it shouldn’t be a privilege to pee."
