Edge of Autism Symposium at Franklin & Marshall April 14

LANCASTER, Pa.- One in 150 children is affected by autism. On Saturday, April 14, autism will be the topic of discussion at the "Edge of Autism Symposium" at Franklin & Marshall College

The Edge of Autism will address medical, political, and educational approaches to autism, and raise awareness for autism treatment. The symposium will be sponsored by Tommy Foundation, a local not-for-profit dedicated to autism awareness, treatment and training, and Franklin & Marshall College.

The event will bring together some of the most forward thinkers from across the northeast. Raun K. Kaufman, CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of America® in Sheffield, Mass., is an international speaker on this disorder and was diagnosed and recovered from the condition years ago. His life the feature of an NBC made-for-TV movie,. He later graduated from Brown University with a degree in biomedical ethics and is CEO at the Institute.

Representative Dennis O'Brien, the speaker of the House of Pennsylvania, who is committed to improving resources available to individuals with autism, will share what he and the Pennsylvanian Autism Task Force have already set in motion to make Pennsylvania the national leader in autism services.

Dr. Stuart Freedenfeld, M.D. is a pediatrician from Stockton, N.J., who has attended and spoken at DAN (Defeat Autism Now) conventions around the country on biomedical interventions for this condition. He is a clinical instructor at Rutgers Medical School and an authority on integrative medicine.

The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder has skyrocketed in the last five years. Autism is a complex developmental disorder that typically appears during the first 3 years of life. It may result in challenges in communication, behavior, emotion, motor skills and social interaction.

All of the net proceeds raised in The Edge of Autism Symposium will go to enabling The Tommy Foundation to provide training and scholarships to interns who are looking to specialize in professions dealing with autism.

Registration for this event begins at 2 p.m. in The Alumni Sports and Fitness Center, College Square, 931 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601. The speakers will kick off the symposium at 3p.m.
