Sixth Season of Allegro the Chamber Orchestra of Lancaster


LANCASTER, Pa. - Allegro, The Chamber Orchestra of Lancaster will be presenting is sixth season this summer with performances on the second Saturday of each summer month starting in May, all in the beautiful Barshinger Center for Musical Arts at Franklin & Marshall College.

The first concert of the season is Saturday May 12 at 7:30, "Premiere Night."

Featured on this concert will be Lancaster county native, violin virtuoso Austin Hartman, performing the Mozart Violin Concerto #3. In addition, Lancaster county composer Ralph Lehman will have his Chamber Symphony premiered by Allegro. The concert will also include Haydn’s stirring Symphony No. 103, the Drum Roll.

The second concert of the season is Saturday June 9 with matinee at 2:00 and evening performance at 7:30. The concert, "Go Baroque," will feature Guitar virtuoso Allen Krantz performing the Vivaldi Concerto for Guitar in D Major. Also on the program is the popular Pachelbel Canon, JS Bach Orchestral Suite No. 3, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, The Jupiter.

The third concert in the series is on July 14 and will be presented both at 2:00 and 7:30. "It’s a Good Day for Brass" will feature Lancaster county native Barton Woomert performing the Nerudo Trumpet Concerto. Bart is presently a member of the Toronto Symphony. In addition, The Lancaster Brass Quintet is special guest artist. Also on the program is the Mozart Serenata Nocturno and Haydn Symphony No. 101, the Clock. The concert is designed to show the passage of time as found in 18th century European towns by brass musicians playing to signify specific times of the day.

The final concert of the season, Saturday August 11 at 2:00 and 7:30 is titled, "The Three Bs." The Newstead Trio, resident trio from the Pennsylvania Academy of Music will perform the Beethoven Triple Concerto. Also on the program is JS Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 and Boccherini Symphony No. 6 "la casa del diavolo" (the house of the devil).

Allegro performs primary 17th and 18th century repertoire, but with a 21st century twist. The mission of Allegro is to bring joy and enrichment to the lives of the community with enthusiastic and energized performances. The Orchestra wears Allegro polo shirts and the orchestra members greet the audience at the door and in the house. The Director of Dr. Brian Norcross, known for his energetic interpretations of music and his positive interaction with performers and audience alike.

General admission tickets are $15 for a single concert or $50 for a season ticket. Students and Senior Citizens are $12 for single concert and $40 for a season ticket. Allegro is a family friendly organization; with Children ages 5 to 16 are admitted free with a paying adult. Although tickets are available at the door, it is recommended to reserve them in advance. All the performances take place in the Barshinger Center for Musical Arts on the Campus of Franklin & Marshall College. The building is easily identified on College Avenue, about 2 blocks south of Harrisburg Pike, by its famous gold weathervane and blue cupola.
