LANCASTER, Pa.- Nineteen students from Lancaster County were among approximately 461 seniors at Franklin & Marshall College who participated in commencement exercises on Saturday (5/12) at the college's graduation ceremony. Wolf Blitzer, CNN anchor, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from President John Fry at the ceremony. The following people were also honored: Donna "Bonnie" Glover '76, executive director, Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County, received an honorary doctor of humane letters; Robert Pfannebecker '55, Lancaster attorney, received an honorary doctor of laws; and Laurie Olin, founding partner of Olin Partnership and practice professor of landscape architecture and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania, received an honorary doctor of humane letters. Associate deans Dick Fluck and Tamara Goeglein presented Bachelor of Arts diplomas to seniors before an audience of about 5,000 people at the private, coeducational liberal arts college. COLUMBIA Jennie Lynn Keifer, a history major, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School. A Dean's List student, she is the daughter of Kenneth and Diane Keifer, Columbia. Jordan David McDonnell, a physics major and mathematics minor, is a 2004 graduate of Hempfield High School. He is the son of Jeffrey and Kimberly McDonnell, Columbia. An Honors list student, he earned John Kershner Scholar designations in both mathematics and physics. Kershner designations are awarded to students of good and regular standing in the College for proficiency in mathematics, and physics and astronomy. McDonnell was also awarded the Michael. J. Mumma Prize in physics and astronomy, given to a graduating senior to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement, citizenship, community leadership, and superior potential for future contributions to physics and/or astronomy, particularly among those likely to continue the study at the graduate level. He was also honored with the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society Prize based on research achievement in pure of applied science, and was named a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States that recognizes outstanding academic achievement, and the Sigma Pi Sigma national physics honor society. He was also a member of the men's club rugby team. McDonnell graduated with summa cum laude designation and earned departmental honors for his project "Effects of a Modified Gravitation Law on the Perihelion Shift." Ashley Joe Patton, a psychology major, is a 2003 graduate of the Milton Hershey School. She is the daughter of Bonita Patton, Columbia. Patton was a member of the Black Student Union and the Hip Hop Review. CONESTOGA Francis Charles Koczur III, a physics major and mathematics minor, is a 2003 graduate of Penn Manor High School. He is the son of Francis Koczur, Jr., Conestoga. Koczur was a member of men's club crew, the Physics Club, and was active in volunteer activities. He was a student employee in Computing Services. EAST PETERSBURG Kelly Nicole McAllister, a Latin major and Greek minor, is a 2003 graduate of Hempfield High School. She is the daughter of Dan and Gail McAllister, East Petersburg. An Honors List student, McAllister earned The George F. Mull Latin Award, given for excellence in the study of Latin, and The Shirley Watkins Steinman Prize in Greek, awarded to a senior for excellence in ancient Greek language and literature. She also earned recognition in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States that recognizes outstanding academic achievement. In addition, she was a member of the Eta Sigma Phi national classics honor society, and the Black Pyramid Senior Honor Society. McAllister was an admission host, a member of the College Chorus, the F&M Christian Fellowship and WFNM student radio. She was a student employee in the Classics Department and was listed in Who's Who Among American College and University Students. McAllister graduated with magna cum laude designation. LANCASTER Melanie Deon Baber, a Spanish major, is a 2003 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School. She is the daughter of Melvin and Demettra Baber, Lancaster. A Dean's list student and a member of the Spalding Leadership program, she was a member of the African Dance Group, the African Drum Club, the Breakdance Club, the F&M Christian Fellowship, the Gospel Choir, Mi Gente Latina, the Spanish Club, and Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She was also an executive for the Black Student Union, the president of the Pre-Dental Club, and volunteered for the America Reads Program and the Our Neighbors, Ourselves community service project. Baber studied abroad and was employed by the athletic department and career services while she was a student. Lloyd "Gene" Clark, a business organizations and society major and film and media studies minor, is a 2003 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School. An Honors list student, Presidential Scholar, and Charles A. Dana Scholar, Clark was the recipient of the Nolt Award for Musical Excellence. He was a member of the Chamber Music Society, the F&M Community Orchestra, the Concert Committee and the Jazz Ensemble. He also served as chair of the Student Senate and was a student employee in the Department of Theater, Dance and Film. Clark graduated with cum laude designation and earned departmental honors for his project titled "'Banding Together': A Documentary on the New Holland Band." Micah P. Dombrowski, a physics major and mathematics minor, is a 1998 graduate of Ohio High School. He is the son of Dr. Margaret Dombrowski, Lancaster. An Honors list student, Dombrowski earned designation as a John Kershner Scholar in both mathematics, and physics and astronomy, awarded to students of good and regular standing in the College for proficiency in the mathematics department and the physics and astronomy department. He also received the Frank Durrell Enck Memorial Prize in Physics, presented to a physics major whose work in the department has earned special recognition by the faculty and peers. He was also recognized as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States that recognizes outstanding academic achievement. In addition, he is a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society and the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society. Dombrowski was also a member of the Physics and Astronomy Club and the Student Activities Funding Committee. Dombrowski graduated with magna cum laude designation and earned departmental honors for his project titled "Laser Writing of Channel Waveguides into Sol-Gel Alumina Films – or – Liquids, Lasers and Luminescence." Meghan Elaine Gentry, a classical archaeology and ancient history and government double major, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Country Day School. She is the daughter of Carolyn Adkins and the stepdaughter of Dr. Gregory Adkins, Lancaster, and the daughter of Keith Gentry, North Little Rock, Ark. An Honors List student, Gentry was the recipient of the Congressman Edwin D. Eshleman Memorial Fund Award, presented to the highest-ranking Political Science major who was domiciled in Lancaster County immediately prior to his or her admission. She was also a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society, a The College Reporter student newspaper, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and the Student Conduct Committee. Gentry graduated with cum laude designation. Kristen Andrea Groleau, a government and business, organizations and society double major, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School. She is the daughter of George and Deborah Groleau, Lancaster. An Honors list student, member of Pi Gamma Mu National Honor Society for social science, and Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society for political science. She has also been given recognition in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States that recognizes outstanding academic achievement. Groleau was also a member of the women's track team and the John Marshall Pre-Law Honor Society. Groleau graduated with magna cum laude designation. Elizabeth Anne Horst, a government major, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. She is the daughter of Lisa and Randall Horst, Lancaster. An Honors List student, Horst was listed in Who's Who Among American College and University Students. Catherine Elizabeth Luik, a biology major, is a 2003 graduate of McCaskey High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Pat Luik, Lancaster. An Honors List student and John Marshall Scholar, Luik was a member of the Pre-Veterinary Club. Luik graduated with cum laude designation. Erin Helena Roschel, a biochemistry and molecular biology major, is a 2003 graduate of McCaskey High School. She is the charge of Joann Parry, Lancaster, and Ronald and Frances Roschel, Lancaster. An Honors list student, she participated in WFNM, the student radio station. Daniel Emery Taglioli, a business administration (management) major, he is a 2001 graduate of William Allen High School. He is the son of Cynthia and Quintes Taglioli, Allentown. Taglioli was an employee of the Computing Services and Admission Departments as a student. LITITZ Gregory Michael Davies, an environmental studies and theater double major, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Country Day School. An Honors List student, Davies was the recipient of the Environmental Studies Award, presented to the most outstanding student completing an environmental studies class in the current academic year, and the Franklin J. Schaffner Theatre Award for outstanding contributions to the Green Room Theatre. A veteran of several theater productions at Franklin & Marshall, Davies was also a member o the Martial Arts Club and the Symphony Orchestra. Davies graduated with cum laude designation. MARIETTA Dylan Stern-Courney, a theater major, is a 2002 graduate of Donegal High School. He is the son of Norman Courney and Linde Stern, Marietta. Stern-Courney has appeared in numerous theatrical productions, including Threepenny Opera and Macbeth. He has also been a member of several theatrical technical crews and played guitar for the production of The Rocky Horror Show. Stern-Courney has also produced several films and was a member of the Aikido Club. MILLERSVILLE Barbara Jean Bee, a mathematics major, is a 2003 graduate of Penn Manor High School. She is the daughter of Betty and Robert Bee, Millersville. A Dean's list student, Bee was vice president of the Alumni Student Association, captain of the women's squash team and captain of the women's tennis team. She also served as a public service summer intern. Peter Hurst Helman, a chemistry major, is a 2003 graduate of Penn Manor High School. He is the son of William and Patricia Helman, Millersville. A Dean's list student, he appeared in F&M theater productions, was a presented in the College's Research Fair, and was a student employee of the Chemistry Department. STRASBURG Joshua Thomas Welk, a business, organizations and society major and economics minor, is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster Christian High School. He is the son of Thomas and Cynthia Welk, Strasburg. A Dean's list student, he was a member of the baseball team.
