LANCASTER, Pa.- Gregory Adkins, professor of physics and astronomy, has been named to an endowed professorship at Franklin & Marshall College. Adkins has been named The William G. and Elizabeth R. Simeral Professor of Physics effective July 1, 2007 The Simeral Professorship is named in honor of Dr. William G. Simeral '48 and his wife. Dr. Simeral, a former vice chairman of the Board of Trustees, was executive vice president of the DuPont Company and vice chairman and chief operating officer of Conoco. Adkins, a leading expert in QED [quantum electrodynamics] calculations, received his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been a member of the Franklin & Marshall faculty since 1983. In addition to publishing numerous papers in highly respected journals, conference proceedings, and edited volumes, Adkins is the author of several articles in the premier physics research publication, "Physical Review Letters." He has given more than 40 colloquia and talks at professional meetings, including the Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics of the American Physical Society and the Quantum Infrared Physics (international meeting) in Paris. Adkins' work has received several grants, including funding from the Research Corporation, and the National Science Foundation. He earned Franklin & Marshall's prestigious Bradley R.
