LANCASTER, Pa. - David H. Lehman, Ph.D., Franklin & Marshall College Class of '68, of Houston, Texas, received one of Franklin & Marshall College's highest alumni awards, the Alumni Medal, during The College's annual Reunion Weekend, June 2-3.
The Alumni Medal is presented to an alumnus/a in recognition of distinguished service to the College. Lehman retired from Exxon in 2002. He began at Exxon as a senior research geologist and took on positions of increasing responsibility during his 28-year tenure with the company. Lehman was an active participant in academic and athletic life at F&M during his undergraduate years, participating in both varsity wrestling and football, and serving on Black Pyramid, the senior honor society. Following his graduation, Lehman served on a tour of duty in Vietnam, after which he earned a Ph.D. in geology at the University of Texas at Austin. He proceeded to work as an exploration geologist, eventually hired by Exxon Oil in 1974. In 2002, Lehman launched the Geosciences Founders Society, helping F&M students by connecting them with alumni and friends who had work experience in the field, in aid of which he arranged a 2004 student/faculty trip to Houston featuring tours of major oil companies and even an active oil rig. In 2006, he organized an alumni symposium in Houston on "Earth's Energy Future," which helped the society to rekindle camaraderie and the spirit of the College among alumni and faculty. Active in athletics as well as academics during his time at F&M, Lehman was also a founding member of the Franklin & Marshall Diplomat Athletic Club, serving as an Advisory Council member from 2003 to 2006. During his tenure, the Diplomat Athletic Club initiated efforts to involve alumni more actively on behalf of the student athletes, including through financial support. Lehman's citation reads: "David Lehman's role in establishing and guiding the Diplomat Athletic Club and the Geosciences Founders Society has demonstrated to countless alumni both the value and the pleasure of ongoing engagement in the life of the College." Lehman and his wife, Patsy, are the parents of Lisa Lehman, who graduated from F&M in 2001.
