LANCASTER, Pa. – Colorado Springs, Colo., resident Larry D. Bowers, Ph.D., Senior Managing Director for Technical and Information Resources at the United States Anti-Doping Agency, received one of Franklin & Marshall College's highest alumni awards, the Alumni Citation, at the College's Reunion Weekend, on June 2.
The Alumni Citation is given to an individual who is distinguished in a particular profession, has provided dedicated leadership and service to the community, and has established an exemplary record of accomplishments in a specific field of endeavor. In his role with the USADA, Bowers combines the highest standards of scientific inquiry with a powerful commitment to the development and enforcement of effective public policy. His citation reads, "His career path exemplifies the mission of our beloved College – to foster in its students qualities of intellect, creativity, and character, that they may live fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to their occupations, their communities, and their world." Bowers earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry, went on to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry form the University of Georgia, and then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. For nearly three decades, Bowers pursued a successful academic career, holding faculty positions at several academic institutions, including the University of Minnesota, and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. As a scholar, he is extensively published, and regularly presented at scientific meetings. He and his wife, Janet Pietruch Bowers, who from graduated F&M in 1973, have two children, Geoffrey and Kimberly. Founded in 1787, Franklin & Marshall College is a coeducational, liberal arts institution. Approximately 2,050 students are enrolled in the college's 40 academic disciplines.
