LANCASTER, Pa.-Franklin & Marshall Emeritus Lewis Audenreid Professor of History Solomon Wank's article, "'Aristocrats and Politics in Austria 1867-1914,' A Case of Historiographical Neglect," has been selected for inclusion in the International Library of Essays in Political History, published by Ashgate Publishing Limited of London. The article will appear in October 2007.
In his article, Wank presents a case study that shows that the Austrian aristocracy exercised considerable political power and influence into the twentieth century, contrary to the conventional wisdom that at that time that aristocracy was reduced to an archaic social class given over to frivolous activities. The article concludes that, largely unhindered by the rise of bourgeois capitalist society and liberal political institutions, the continued dominance of the nobility impeded the full development of a modern industrial society empowered by mass politics. International Library of Essays in Political History aims to collect a wide range of important and influential essays, draws predominantly from English language journals. Wank's article, which originally appeared in the summer 1992 issue of East European Quarterly, will be reprinted in a volume of the series titled European Political History. —30— -30- |
