Franklin & Marshall Announces Fall 2007 Cultural Events


LANCASTER, Pa.-More than 60 films, concerts, art exhibits, lectures, theater and dance productions will be offered by Franklin & Marshall College during the Fall 2007 semester.

The offerings are compiled in Encore, the College's semiannual calendar of events, which is published by the Office of College Communications and is available for free by calling (717) 291-3981.

The Phillips Museum of Art, comprising the Rothman Gallery, Dana Gallery and Curriculum Gallery, will present both traveling exhibitions and rotating exhibits from the College's extensive permanent collection. The Museum provides opportunities for research and study, as well as less formal learning experiences for students, faculty and the Lancaster community. The first exhibits are a faculty art exhibition, on display in the Dana Gallery Aug. 29-Sept. 30; and "Drawings from the Inside," by Peter Mollenkof on display in the Rothman Gallery Aug. 29-Sept. 30.

The Phillips Museum of Art is open 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday-Friday; 12:30-4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. It is closed holidays and during the college's fall and Thanksgiving breaks. Admission is free.

The spectacular Roschel Performing Arts Center at Franklin & Marshall College kicks off its sixth season with an exciting and eclectic series of performances.

The first performance will take place Aug. 27 when New York improv theater troupe The Upright Citizens Brigade brings its touring show to the Roschel stage. The fall season continues with performances of Mary Zimmerman's "Metamorphoses," on Oct. 25-27 and Nov 2-3, and "Operation Homecoming," a staged reading of texts written by soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and their families at home, which will take place on Nov. 11. The fall season will also feature the Dark Horse/Black Forest dance company, featuring Yanira Castro on Oct. 5-7 and the annual Fall Dance Concert Nov. 17-19. The Sound Horizons Concert Series, featuring performers of national and international renown, begins Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. with a performance by the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass. Oct. 6 will bring Trefoil, Early Music for Voice, Lute and Harp, to campus for a program titled "In the Chamber of the Harpers: Late Medieval Music from the Iberian Peninsula." The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Also on the Sound Horizons schedule is Andrew Mah, concert guitarist on Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. The concert will feature works by Brazilian, Cape Verdean and Paraguayan composers. All performances will be held in The Ann and Richard Barshinger Center for the Musical Arts in Hensel Hall. Tickets are $10 for off-campus patrons. Ten ensemble concerts, featuring musicians and vocalists from both the College and Lancaster communities, comprise the Music Department Concerts, to be held in the Barshinger Center during the fall semester. All performances are free.

The popular CEC Weekend Film Series debuts Aug. 31 with this year's blockbuster "Shrek the Third." The next two films include "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and "Knocked Up." All movies are location to be announced, pending weather, unless otherwise indicated. Tickets are $3 for off-campus patrons and $1 with an F&M ID. Times and films are subject to change. Several non-Hollywood films will also be shown this fall. "The Tsunami's Wake: Healing from Trauma," written, directed and edited by Franklin & Marshall Professor Dirk Eitzen and shot by Adjunct Professor Andrea Campbell will play on Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roschel Performing Arts Center. "Harlem's Blues," a film by Franklin & Marshall Alumnus Randy Wilkins '01 will be shown on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Green Room Theater.

There is a full slate of lectures and colloquia taking place at F&M during the fall semester. The year begins Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. with Christina Miller's presentation of ethical metalsmithing "Radical Jewelry Makeover," at the Joseph International Center. Also this fall, Steven Beller will discuss "What is Austrian About Austrian Art" on Sept. 19, in The Ware House Commons and author Edward Larson will deliver the North Lecture on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in The Bonchek Auditorium of the Barshinger Life Sciences & Philosophy Building.
