LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall College's Grundy Observatory will be open to the public the third Monday of each month beginning Sept. 17. Public hours will begin approximately one hour after sundown or 6:30 p.m. (whichever is later) and will last for two hours, weather permitting, however exact times can be obtained by calling (717) 291-4136. The observatory, which features a 16" reflecting telescope with a full complement of scientific instruments, as well as a vintage 11" Clark refracting telescope, will be manned by civil engineer and amateur astronomer Gerald McClune. McClune will be available to answer questions and give instruction on the use of the telescopes. In addition, as in previous years, the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) will join McClune during the public observatory hours, providing their expertise, as well as additional views through their telescopes. The AELC hopes to give budding astronomers an opportunity to try out and compare telescopes that they might be able to afford on their own. Grundy Observatory is located on the south side of Baker Athletic Fields at the north end of Wilson Drive. Parking is available along the east side of the building.
