LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall College opens its doors for the 2007-08 academic year on Friday, Aug. 24, when 587 members of the incoming first-year class—the Class of 2011—arrive for orientation and convocation.
This fall begins Franklin & Marshall's 220th academic year. The formal convocation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. on the College's Manning Alumni Green in front of Old Main. (rain location will be the college's Alumni Sports and Fitness Center). Faculty and administrators will participate in the ceremony robed in academic regalia. Incoming first-year students will be officially welcomed to campus by President John Fry, during the ceremony. This first-year class will be among the first to have classes in the College's new Barshinger Life Sciences and Philosophy Building, shop and eventually live in the new College Row complex along Harrisburg Pike, and play on the new turf field. For the 21st consecutive year, first-year students will participate in an orientation program that includes "A Liberal Education," an academic seminar designed to introduce students to the rigors of academic life. The entering class will be divided into small groups and will meet with a faculty member or administrator to discuss Young Man Axelrod by Sinclair Lewis. Orientation will also include sessions to help first-year students with their social transition to college and to living in Lancaster. The class will consist of 310 women and 277 men. Of the incoming students, 11.1% are international students, while 13.3 percent of American students are of Native American, African, Asian or Latino descent. The class hails from 29 states (including Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.) and 23 foreign countries. Upperclass students return to campus Aug. 26. Classes begin Aug. 29.
